KING

This remarkable King 5B Symphony Silversonic trombone, serial #473203, was built in the early 1970s and remains a pristine example from the Eastlake, Ohio eraformerly referred to on this website as a “closet queen.”
That phrase has long been used here at The Brass Exchange to describe instruments that have seen minimal playing time and remain in exceptionally well-preserved, all-original condition.

All parts are factory original, including lacquer and components. The sterling silver 9-inch bell features clear lacquer on the exterior and 24K gold plating inside the flare—an unmistakable hallmark of the Silversonic line. The bell shows no damage or repair, and the rotor valve section operates flawlessly.

The slide is straight, smooth, and responsive, offering effortless control and a free-blowing feel. Tonally, this 5B plays enormous: its wide bell throat and gradual taper give it a resonant character that bridges the gap between a large-bore tenor and a compact bass.

Ideal for big band players who double on 3rd or 4th parts, or for orchestral musicians needing clarity and projection, the sterling silver bell projects with remarkable energy and focus—a signature of King’s golden-age design.

Includes the original large-shank King mouthpiece, case with keys, and retains its factory finish throughout. Unlike overhauled examples often seen online, this horn remains unrestored and fully original—a rare survivor of its kind.

FAQs

What makes the King 5B Silversonic special?
The 5B combines King’s large-bore (.547) design with a sterling-silver bell, producing exceptional projection, tonal color, and depth. Each Silversonic bell was hand-spun and gold-plated inside, creating both brilliance and warmth.

How does the 5B differ from the 4B?
The 4B uses an 8½-inch bell and responds a bit lighter; the 5B offers a fuller, more orchestral voice with broader dynamic range—ideal for players seeking a “small bass” feel.
