Overview

This Conn 4H trombone, serial number 332422, built in 1938 during the early Elkhart era, is a striking example of Conn’s pre-war craftsmanship—featuring original silver plating and classic Art Deco engraving.

The engraving style on this instrument reflects the geometric Art Deco design language used by Conn during the 1930s—characterized by crisp line work, symmetry, and stylized patterning that defined pre-war Elkhart production.

A particularly notable detail on this example is the placement of the serial number within the bell engraving itself, integrated directly into the decorative cartouche near the rim. At the same time, the serial number is also present in the more typical factory locations, including the cork barrel and outer slide.

Having curated hundreds of vintage Conn trombones over the years, this is the first instance we have encountered of this specific combination—where the serial appears both in the standard stamped locations and as part of the engraved bell design.

This instrument remains 100% original in finish and components and presents as a well-preserved example of an early 4H.

Each reflects a slightly different phase of Conn’s small-bore evolution.

Player Perspective

The Conn 4H is one of the defining small-bore tenor trombones of its time.

This example plays as you would expect from a horn of this era:

• responsive and efficient
• compact tonal core
• quick articulation
• classic jazz-era color and flexibility

It is particularly well suited for:

• trad jazz
• Dixieland
• small ensemble playing
• lead work in big band settings

This is the type of instrument associated with players like Jack Teagarden, where sound, phrasing, and personality take priority over sheer volume.

Condition Summary

This instrument has received full shop service at The Brass Exchange and is fully playable.

• original silver plating throughout
• no history of major trauma or structural damage
• all original parts
• slide is playable and functional

As expected with an instrument approaching 90 years old:

• there are smooth wear areas on the inner slide tubes
• these do not prevent playability but reflect honest use

This is best described as a player-grade vintage instrument, not a museum piece—and it is priced accordingly.
