It is shown here as a historical and reference example for players researching mid-1960s H.N. Whiteโera King Silversonic trombones with sterling silver bells.
โฆ Historical Perspective
This King Silversonic Trombone Model 1485 (SN 417706) was built in the mid-1960s, during the peak of H.N. Whiteโs hand-crafted era. Originally a near closet-queen example, it showed exceptionally light use and retained superior structural integrity.
The lacquer was remarkably clean for its age, the tuning slide dings had been previously removed without trauma, and the handslide action ranked among the best you will find from this period.
This model features the legendary 9" sterling silver bell with gold-washed interior โ a signature King combination that delivers both visual beauty and exceptional tonal projection. The .536 bore nickel-silver handslide is slightly narrower than modern .547 symphonic tenors, giving the instrument a distinctive balance of agility, warmth, and focus.
At the time of sale, it accepted a large shank mouthpiece (one included) and came with its original case in excellent condition.
๐ผ Player Perspective
The Model 1485 Silversonic has a distinctive playing personality โ energetic, colorful, and unmistakably โKing.โ The .536 handslide gives it a more agile, responsive feel than modern .547 symphonic tenors while still delivering a full, commanding sound under the bell.
The sterling silver bell adds a level of power and resonance that brass simply cannot duplicate. Sterlingโs higher density produces vivid projection with striking clarity at the front of the bell and a shimmering overtone structure that comes alive as you lean into it. Once adjusted to the feedback and weight of sterling silver, the horn rewards the player with enormous tonal energy and a true โbig voice.โ
Overall, this is the kind of Silversonic that plays easily at soft dynamics, opens up beautifully when pushed, and feels both flexible and authoritative. Players coming from .547 horns will notice the added agility while still enjoying all the breadth and presence expected from a professional large-bell tenor.

โ Questions Trombone Players Often Ask
What makes the King Silversonic bell special?
Sterling silver is heavier and denser than brass, generating enormous tonal energy and projection. Once mastered, it produces a powerful, resonant sound unmatched by traditional brass bells.
Is the .536 bore limiting compared to .547 modern tenors?
Not at all. The .536 slide offers agility and efficiency while still projecting like a full symphonic horn โ especially when paired with the 9" sterling silver bell.
Is this a good choice for both performance and collecting?
Yes. The Model 1485 Silversonic is highly regarded as both a playerโs horn and a collectible due to its craftsmanship, rarity, and sterling bell construction.
