✦ Historical Perspective & Instrument Overview
This Olds Super Featherweight trombone is an exceptionally rare example from the Los Angeles production era, dating to approximately 1940 and bearing serial number 12902, with additional receiver markings “8LLM.” Instruments of this configuration are seldom encountered, even among advanced Olds collectors.
The Super Featherweight represents a larger and more specialized evolution of the classic LA Super. It features a lightweight 8" bronze bell fitted with a narrow nickel-silver tone ring, hand-engraved with the distinctive “Featherweight Super Olds” marking. This combination contributes both to the instrument’s unmistakable visual identity and to its warm, resonant tonal character.
One of the defining characteristics of this model is its ultra-light fluted handslide, built with shorter stockings than standard Olds designs. The reduced slide mass results in an exceptionally fast and effortless feel. Based on compatibility observations, the bore is believed to fall in the .500/.510 range, as the inner slide aligns correctly with an Olds Recording outer slide. Notably, the Featherweight bell receiver will not accept a smaller standard Super slide, reinforcing the conclusion that this model was engineered as a distinct and purpose-built system rather than a cosmetic variation.
This particular instrument is a single-owner example, preserved in remarkably mint condition. It was closet-kept for decades and shows virtually no evidence of regular playing. The trombone retains all original lacquer, free of scratches, dents, or wear. A full professional shop service was completed, including a chemical bath, ensuring optimal mechanical condition while preserving originality. The instrument includes its original mouthpiece and original case, further enhancing its historical completeness.
From a player’s perspective, the Super Featherweight offers a warm, easy-speaking response paired with a slide feel that is both light and precise. It stands as a rare intersection of collector-grade preservation and real-world musical usability, making it equally compelling as a historical reference and as a playable professional instrument even by modern standards.
