Overview

This Olds Super Featherweight trombone, serial number 12902, was produced in Los Angeles around 1940 and represents one of the rarest known variants of the Super Featherweight design. Featherweight models themselves were produced in relatively small numbers during the Los Angeles era, and examples built with an unusually large 8″ bronze (gold brass) bell are even more uncommon.

Among the hundreds of Olds trombones documented at The Brass Exchange since 2010, only a small handful of Featherweight instruments with this larger-bell configuration have appeared. This instrument came from a professional player’s estate and remains in excellent structural condition with all components appearing original.

With instruments of this age it is often difficult to confirm lacquer originality with certainty, but the finish presents evenly and beautifully, consistent with a well-preserved Los Angeles-era Olds trombone.

✦ Instrument Provenance

This trombone has an unusual and well-documented history. It was originally sold by The Brass Exchange and later returned as part of a professional player’s estate. It is rare to encounter the same historic instrument documented twice, and both archive listings are preserved to provide a complete historical record for collectors and researchers.

Historical Perspective – The Olds Super Featherweight

The Olds Super Featherweight represents one of the most experimental designs from Olds’ Los Angeles production period before World War II. These instruments explored ultra-light construction concepts while maintaining professional tonal character.

Typical Featherweight models feature smaller bells and extremely light fluted handslides. This example’s rare 8″ bell produces a broader tonal footprint while preserving the lively articulation associated with Olds LA instruments. Players familiar with large-bell Olds Recording models often find this configuration especially appealing.

Collectors and researchers frequently search for information about Olds Featherweight trombones, Los Angeles-era Olds production, LL-marked receivers, or dual-bore Featherweight specifications. Archive examples like this help document variations that were never fully described in period catalogs.

Player Perspective

Despite their rarity, Super Featherweights were built as professional instruments. The ultra-light fluted slide produces an exceptionally fast response, and the dual-bore design supports flexibility across registers.

The uncommon 8″ bell adds warmth and breadth while retaining the Featherweight’s quick articulation. Among the many Olds trombones handled at The Brass Exchange since 2010, this instrument stood out as one of the finest Featherweight examples — light in the hand, resonant in tone, and very easy to play.
