Benge

Overview

This Benge 165F Large Bore Tenor Trombone, built in the 1980s, features an 8.5″ yellow brass bell and lightweight .547 bore brass handslide. The instrument includes its case, mouthpiece, and slide and valve lubricants.

Before sale, the trombone received full shop service at The Brass Exchange including chemical cleaning, rotor service, and slide optimization. It presented as a strong playing instrument with no structural damage and normal cosmetic lacquer wear consistent with age.

Benge trombones from this period share design elements with contemporary King instruments following the King acquisition, including similar fittings, tubing, and construction methods. These are well-built American instruments and remain dependable choices for advancing players.

Player Perspective

Bach, Conn, Yamaha, King, and Benge instruments each have their own characteristic feel and sound concept. Because of shared design lineage after the King acquisition, many Benge 165F trombones have construction details similar to King large-bore tenors of the same era.

This model works well as a first F-attachment trombone for advancing students, comeback players, or community ensemble musicians seeking a reliable American-made large-bore tenor.

📸 Photography From Our Early Archive

While lighting and background techniques have improved over time, these images remain part of our shop’s history and document instruments we were honored to handle.

They also reflect our long-standing interest in how to photograph musical instruments clearly and honestly for players and collectors.
