Overview
This Benge Model 175 Medium Bore Straight Tenor Trombone features an 8″ bell and .525 bore handslide, accepting standard small-shank mouthpieces. The instrument retained original parts and lacquer and presented as a clean example of this less-common Benge model.
At intake it showed only minor cosmetic wear and small tuning-slide dings typical of normal use. Full shop service including chemical cleaning and slide optimization was planned prior to sale. The slide tubes were straight and mechanically sound.
The Benge 175 is a relatively uncommon medium-bore model, and examples are rarely encountered compared with more common Benge large-bore tenors. It occupies a useful space between smaller jazz tenors and full symphonic large-bore instruments.
Player Perspective
Medium-bore tenors in the .525 range are popular for players wanting a versatile straight tenor with more breadth than a .500-bore jazz horn while remaining lighter than a large-bore symphonic instrument. The Benge 175 works well for jazz ensemble, big band section work, chamber playing, or general use where a medium-bore straight tenor is preferred.
As with other Benge instruments produced after the King acquisition, construction details share similarities with contemporary King designs, contributing to dependable mechanical performance.
