Overview

This King 5B Symphony Tenor Trombone, built in the early 1970s, features a 9″ yellow brass bell and large-bore design similar in overall concept to the King 4B, with familiar King valve section construction and ergonomics. The instrument showed only moderate lacquer wear from normal use and no structural dents or prior repair history.

Before sale, it received recent cleaning and mechanical service at The Brass Exchange. The handslide operated smoothly and reliably, and the instrument played well following preparation. A non-original Benge case in very good condition was included along with mouthpiece and basic lubricants.

King Symphony models from this era remain respected examples of American large-bore tenor trombone design.

Player Perspective

Large-bore tenor trombones like the King 5B Symphony are often chosen by players moving from smaller jazz tenors into symphonic band or orchestral settings. For King players familiar with 2B or 3B models, the 5B provides a larger-bore option while retaining familiar King balance and feel.

Clean early-1970s examples continue to be useful instruments for advancing students, comeback players, and community ensemble musicians seeking a dependable vintage large-bore tenor.
