Overview
This Vintage King 4B Silver Sonorous Tenor Trombone, built in the early 1970s, features a sterling silver bell with gold-washed interior, F-attachment with traditional wrap, and large-bore .547 handslide construction. The instrument retained original components and included its original King case.
The horn had been freshly chemical-cleaned and refinished prior to sale. The handslide was aligned and operated smoothly, with one upper inner tube previously replaced. Springs were present in first position, and the rotor valve functioned quietly and reliably.
Silver Sonorous models are notable examples of King’s sterling-bell trombone designs from this period.
Player Perspective
Large-bore King 4B trombones are widely used in symphonic band, commercial, and ensemble settings. Silver Sonorous versions feature sterling silver bells which, from a professional player’s perspective, require a bit more energy to fully resonate, but once mastered can produce substantial tonal energy that many players appreciate.
Clean early-1970s examples remain popular with players looking for a classic King large-bore tenor with distinctive construction and mid-century American design heritage.
