The reason, according to Mr. Cronkhite, is so that there is less material protruding that could potentially get caught on something unexpected like a car door. This Case has structure and offers protection to your instrument. You can stand it on end and it won't tip over. The Bell Compartment is rigid and protective. The inner compartment is just large enough to fit the straight tenor bell section and the removable slide compartment. The new Torpedo make Cronkhite cases are every bit as good as the original Cronkhites if not better. A few improvements include a more closed cell foam interior, which is much softer to the touch, and does not attract organic particles quite as easily.
The backpack straps are sewn into the case and reinforced with brass rivets. The reason why the straps are not removable, according to Mr. Cronkhite, from a telephone conversation many years ago, is that "when you use the straps for the intended purpose, it's much more comfortable this way, rather than a metal D-ring that can bind into your shoulders". There is also a brass buckle for strap adjustment. The final improvement that we notice is the fastener is made of steel, not likely to break or fail as the previous plastic ones.
