Overview
This pre-owned S.E. Shires Custom Series 1YM tenor bell section offers an excellent opportunity to add one of Shires' most popular bell tapers to your existing modular setup while saving substantially over the cost of a new replacement.
The original lacquer has been professionally removed, leaving a natural unlacquered brass finish. Like all unlacquered brass instruments, the bell now displays modest oxidation and an early natural patina. Many players appreciate the appearance of naturally aging brass, while others periodically polish the surface to maintain a brighter finish.
This bell section is fully compatible with S.E. Shires Custom Series large bore (.547) components and many compatible modular configurations.
Condition Summary
This bell section is in excellent pre-owned condition with no dents, dings, or signs of previous damage or repair.
The unlacquered brass finish shows modest natural oxidation and early patina, which is completely normal for brass without a protective lacquer coating. Structurally, the bell is excellent and ready to install and play.
Player Perspective
The 1YM taper is well known for its balanced response, broad tonal color, and versatility across orchestral, wind ensemble, solo, and commercial performance settings.
Many professional players prefer unlacquered brass because they feel it offers a slightly lighter playing feel, and some believe removing the lacquer allows the bell to resonate more freely. As with many aspects of brass playing, individual preferences naturally vary.
