Overview
Paris-made Antoine Courtois 420BE professional large bore tenor trombone, serial number 343344. This pre-owned instrument has recently received full shop service including chemical cleaning, rotor service, and slide adjustment.
The 420BE features an open wrap F-attachment, .547-inch large bore slide, traditional rotary valve with mechanical linkage, and an 8½-inch yellow brass bell. The instrument also features a lightweight outer slide, Saturn water key, and curved hand grip for added comfort.
Courtois trombones have never been especially common in the United States, but those familiar with the brand understand that these instruments belong firmly in the professional category. Most importantly, this trombone plays exceptionally well and is ready for immediate use.
Condition Summary
Condition is very good overall with only minor cosmetic wear consistent with normal use.
The slide is one of the strongest features of this instrument. It is straight, true, properly aligned, and free from inner slide tube plating defects. There is no evidence of prior slide damage.
The rotor operates properly, the linkage is responsive, and all playing components have been serviced and inspected prior to listing. Some lacquer loss and early natural patina are visible on portions of the bell flare, giving the instrument character without affecting performance.
A Protec Max case in excellent condition is included.
Player Perspective
This is the type of instrument that makes a great deal of sense for a player who wants a professional tenor trombone but does not necessarily need to purchase a factory-new instrument.
It would be an excellent choice for an advancing student moving into a first professional-level trombone, as well as educators, serious amateurs, and professional musicians seeking a dependable large bore tenor for orchestra, concert band, chamber music, church ensembles, solo literature, and musical theater work.
At this level, the discussion becomes less about brand recognition and more about playability. Does the instrument respond properly? Is the slide excellent? Does it produce a broad, open sound and allow the player to perform with confidence?
This Courtois checks those boxes. The response is immediate, the sound is centered and open, and the instrument feels every bit like the professional tenor trombone it was designed to be.
Value Perspective
Current production Courtois 420-series professional tenor trombones sell for substantially more depending upon configuration and valve design.
This Paris-made 420BE offers an opportunity to acquire a professional European-built tenor trombone at a fraction of the cost of a comparable new instrument.
For players shopping in the same general range as a nice used Bach 42BO, Conn 88H, or Yamaha Xeno, this Courtois deserves serious consideration. It is a professional-level instrument that remains somewhat overlooked in the United States, creating an excellent value opportunity for the right player.
