Overview

The Yamaha YBL-321 is one of those bass trombones that often surprises players. While it was never marketed as Yamaha's flagship professional bass trombone, many musicians are shocked by how well these instruments play when they encounter a clean example.

This Yamaha YBL-321 Single Valve Bass Trombone, serial number 012422, is an exceptionally well-preserved example believed to date from the late 1970s to early 1980s. The instrument features a 9.5" rose brass bell, yellow brass F-attachment wrap and tuning slide, and a standard-weight .562" bore handslide.

Most importantly, this instrument appears to have lived an unusually easy life. The bell has never been damaged, the slide is exceptionally clean, and there is no evidence of major repairs or restoration work. The overall condition suggests very limited use over its lifetime.

We recently completed a thorough inspection and play test. The instrument plays beautifully, responds easily throughout the range, and delivers the rich, warm sound that has made rose brass bass trombones popular among players seeking a darker tonal palette.

The YBL-321 has been discontinued for many years, and examples in this level of condition rarely appear on the secondary market. If you have been searching for a clean single-valve bass trombone without the weight, complexity, and cost of a modern double-valve setup, this is an instrument worth serious consideration.

Condition Summary

Condition is a major highlight of this instrument.

  • Original rose brass bell in excellent condition
  • No evidence of significant dents, major repairs, or accident damage
  • Standard-weight .562 bore handslide is exceptionally clean
  • Slide action is smooth, responsive, and free from significant defects
  • Rotor functions properly and seals well
  • Tuning slides move as expected
  • Overall presentation is remarkably clean for its age
  • Includes the original Yamaha hard case

The original case is in outstanding condition and appears to have seen very little use. All latches function properly and the interior remains clean and protective.

Finding a YBL-321 is not difficult. Finding one this clean is.

Player Perspective

Many players automatically assume they need a double-valve bass trombone. In reality, a quality single-valve bass trombone remains an excellent choice for a wide range of musical situations.

This Yamaha offers a lighter feel and quicker response than many modern double-valve bass trombones. The rose brass bell produces a broad, warm sound while maintaining clarity and flexibility.

We know several professional orchestral players who continue to use single-valve bass trombones for certain repertoire where a lighter, more agile sound is preferred. Not every performance requires the additional weight and resistance of a large modern independent-valve bass trombone.

This instrument would be an excellent choice for:

  • A tenor player purchasing a first bass trombone
  • An advancing student moving into bass trombone literature
  • A doubler needing occasional bass trombone capability
  • Community band and orchestra musicians
  • Players who prefer a more responsive, less cumbersome bass trombone setup

The result is a bass trombone that feels comfortable immediately while still delivering the depth and authority players expect from a true .562 bore instrument.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Is a single-valve bass trombone enough?

For many players, absolutely. A single F-attachment provides access to low F, E, E-flat, D, D-flat, and C. Unless your playing regularly requires modern orchestral excerpts demanding low B-natural and extensive valve combinations, a quality single-valve bass trombone remains highly practical.

What makes the rose brass bell desirable?

Rose brass contains a higher copper content than traditional yellow brass. Many players hear a warmer, broader sound with additional tonal complexity and richness, particularly in the middle and low registers.

Is the Yamaha YBL-321 a good first bass trombone?

Yes. The YBL-321 has long been regarded as one of Yamaha's most successful step-up bass trombone designs. It provides true bass trombone dimensions and sound without the weight, complexity, and maintenance requirements of many double-valve models.

Are replacement parts still available?

Most routine maintenance items remain serviceable through qualified repair technicians, and Yamaha instruments are generally known for long-term reliability and excellent build quality.
