Overview
This Kanstul 1588 large bore tenor trombone is an early production example built in the California factory and features the original O.E. Thayer axial flow valve. It is a .547 bore instrument with an 8.5" yellow brass bell and standard weight construction throughout—this is not a lightweight or thin-wall variant. Most likely built late 1980's-early-90's.
Kanstul ceased production in 2019, but their instruments remain well regarded for build quality, design innovation, and attention to detail. We were an authorized Kanstul dealer during their final years, and this example reflects the consistency and craftsmanship that defined their work.
This particular horn has a fixed (soldered) leadpipe, rather than the removable leadpipe systems offered in later production. All components and lacquer are original, and the instrument shows no history of structural damage.
A full professional shop service has been completed, including chemical cleaning, valve service, and detailed inspection. Any minor imperfections have been addressed. The instrument is dent-free, the slide is properly aligned, and the inner tubes are clean with no plating issues. It is fully prepared and ready for immediate use.
As a reference point, the last published MSRP for the Kanstul 1588 Thayer option, near the end of production in 2019 was in the $4,600 range.
Player Perspective
This is a workhorse large bore tenor built for players who want a full, stable sound with strong projection and consistent response. The standard weight bell and construction provide the kind of tonal energy that fits naturally in orchestral and symphonic settings.
For players looking to step outside the more commonly seen brands, the Kanstul 1588 offers a compelling alternative without sacrificing professional-level performance. It sits firmly in the same category as established large bore designs, while bringing a slightly different feel and response that many players find appealing.
The O.E. Thayer axial flow valve contributes to a more open feel through the valve register, maintaining continuity when engaged. For players familiar with traditional rotor designs, the adjustment is straightforward, with a noticeable difference in how the instrument responds under air.

Questions Players Often Ask
When and where was this Kanstul 1588 made?
This is an early production Kanstul 1588 built in the California factory, during the period when Kanstul was producing professional-level brass instruments entirely in the United States. These instruments are known for their consistent build quality and attention to detail, reflecting the company’s roots in American brass manufacturing.
Who is this Kanstul 1588 best suited for?
This is a strong choice for players looking for a professional large bore tenor that steps outside the more commonly seen brands. It works well for orchestral, concert band, and serious ensemble playing, and also appeals to players who value U.S.-built instruments with a distinct design approach.
Kanstul closed in 2019—will parts or service be a concern?
Not necessarily. Brass instruments are mechanical by nature, and most wear items—such as corks, felts, springs, and linkage components—are not brand-specific. Qualified brass technicians routinely fit modern equivalents as part of normal service work.
We have fully serviced and inspected this instrument and do not see any components that are worn or in need of replacement. In practical terms, maintaining and servicing a Kanstul is no different than most other professional brass instruments, and long-term support should not be a deterrent.
