CONN

Overview

This Conn Connstellation 38B Bb trumpet, serial number K33068, was built in Elkhart, Indiana during the mid-1960s, one of the most recognized and respected periods of Conn production.

This was a true one-owner instrument. The original owner brought it directly to our shop, and the trumpet had remained remarkably well preserved throughout its life. It retained all original parts and original finish, showing only minor cosmetic wear consistent with careful long-term ownership.

A full professional shop service was completed, including chemical cleaning, new pads and felts, and precision valve work. The valves were properly lapped and demonstrated excellent compression. Slides and trigger functioned exactly as designed, with no aftermarket modifications present.

The instrument included its original case, along with the original mutes and mouthpiece, making it an unusually complete surviving example from the Elkhart era.

✦ Historical Perspective

The Conn Connstellation series represented Conn's premium trumpet lineup during much of the 1950s and 1960s. The 38B became one of the most recognizable professional trumpet models of its era, known for its distinctive appearance, excellent projection, and dependable performance characteristics.

The Connstellation name was reserved for Conn's upper-tier instruments, and the 38B reflected that position within the catalog. Its distinctive finish, first-valve trigger, and larger bell design gave it a unique identity that separated it from many competing American trumpets of the period.

Today, original Elkhart-era Connstellation trumpets remain highly collectible, particularly when found in complete and unmodified condition.

✦ Player Perspective

The Conn Connstellation 38B has long been known for its distinctive feel and sound.

With its .438 bore and larger bell design, the trumpet offers a lively and responsive playing experience with strong projection, clarity, and presence. Many players appreciate the model's ability to maintain focus while still producing a broad, energetic sound suitable for ensemble and solo work alike.

The first-valve trigger adds useful flexibility for tuning adjustments and phrasing, particularly in extended register playing.

From a playing standpoint, this example was exceptionally well sorted. Valve action was quick and responsive, compression remained excellent, and the instrument played exactly as intended. It would have appealed equally to jazz players, commercial musicians, advancing students, and collectors seeking a clean Elkhart-era Conn.
