Overview

This King 2B Jiggs Whigham Model 2102 trombone represents a unique pairing of classic King design with a meaningful piece of jazz history.

The instrument combines a lightweight Jiggs Whigham bell with a standard King 2B handslide (serial number 289102). The slide itself carries notable provenance, having previously been owned by legendary jazz trombonist Kai Winding.

According to the previous owner—a professional player—the slide was acquired directly from Kai Winding and later paired with the Jiggs Whigham bell. The result is a responsive and articulate small-bore tenor trombone that blends historical significance with practical performance value.

The instrument retains its original lacquer with a strong overall appearance. The handslide shows typical cosmetic wear consistent with professional use, including a minor ding on the yellow brass slide crook (visible in the photos), which does not affect performance.

Slide alignment is excellent, offering fast, quiet action across all positions.

Player Perspective

The King 2B platform has long been considered one of the defining small-bore jazz trombones.

The Jiggs Whigham Model 2102 bell is slightly lighter than many standard 2B bells, giving the instrument a quicker response and a lively, immediate feel—particularly well suited for lead and commercial playing.

Paired with the standard dual-bore King 2B slide, this setup delivers:

• fast articulation
• clear projection
• classic King “Sweet Tone” brilliance

Players working in big band lead chairs, jazz combos, studio environments, or commercial settings will appreciate how naturally this instrument responds, particularly in upper-register playing while maintaining tonal color and presence.
