Overview
This Olds F Alto Trombone from the 1970’s Fullerton, California era is a rare and beautifully preserved estate example. It is all yellow brass with a traditional friction-fit bell connection and includes the original Olds alto mouthpiece and case. The instrument shows very little use, with no history of damage or repair, perfectly straight slide tubes, and excellent mechanical condition throughout.
We have only seen one other Olds F alto in fifteen years at The Brass Exchange, making this just the second example to pass through our shop. Olds produced relatively few alto trombones, and the F-alto design is especially unusual compared to the standard Eb alto used today.
This instrument has been inspected and play-tested here and needs no service — it is ready for immediate use or collection.
Player Perspective
So who is an Olds F alto really for?
First, collectors of vintage American brass who appreciate rare Fullerton-era Olds instruments. Second, curious players and professional doublers looking to explore a specialty alto trombone with real American heritage. While most modern altos are pitched in Eb, rare F altos like this offer an affordable and historically authentic way to experience a different alto sound concept.
Because the horn is smaller than most altos, it feels light and nimble, with quick response and a sweet upper register. The yellow-brass construction gives warmth and clarity, and the simple friction-fit design keeps the build durable and straightforward.
It’s not intended to replace a modern Eb orchestral alto, but for chamber work, pit orchestra doubling, teaching studios, or collectors, it’s a fascinating and enjoyable instrument.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask
What makes an Olds F alto different from a standard Eb alto?
The Olds F alto is smaller and pitched higher than the usual Eb alto. It uses a small-shank mouthpiece and different slide positions, giving it a lighter feel and distinct tonal color.
Is this suitable for orchestral alto parts?
Most modern orchestral repertoire is written for Eb alto, but an F alto works well for early music, pit orchestra doubling, and specialty ensemble playing.
Are Olds altos collectible?
Yes. Fullerton-era Olds instruments are increasingly appreciated by collectors, especially rare models like the F alto that were produced in small numbers.
