This Bach Corporation 17 small shank trombone mouthpiece was produced during the Elkhart, Indiana era, manufactured between approximately 1963 and the late 1970s. Mouthpieces from this period were made using traditional lathe-cut methods rather than modern CNC machining, a distinction that many professional players feel contributes to the characteristic response, consistency, and tonal balance associated with classic Bach mouthpieces.

The Bach 17 is a rare model and is encountered far less frequently than more common Bach small-shank sizes. In fact, this is the first Bach 17 we have seen at The Brass Exchange, underscoring its scarcity even among vintage Bach mouthpieces. As a result, it holds interest not only for players but also for collectors who value less-documented Bach designs from the Corporation era.

With a 24.20 mm rim diameter, the Bach 17 sits on the smaller end of Bach’s trombone mouthpiece lineup. By comparison, a Bach 15 measures approximately 24.40 mm, a 12 measures 24.50 mm, an 11 measures 24.70 mm, and a 7 measures 24.75 mm. The 17 features a standard cup that is slightly deeper than a typical C cup, producing a focused, controlled sound that avoids excessive brilliance while remaining clear and efficient.

In practical playing terms, the Bach 17 is an excellent choice for small-bore trombone players, particularly those who prioritize ease in the upper register and a lighter, more responsive feel. It can also be a strong option for trumpet or horn players doubling on trombone, especially for those who prefer not to adapt to larger, heavier trombone mouthpieces when switching instruments.

This example has been cleaned and inspected in our shop and is offered in excellent, player-ready condition.
