Overview

This Olds Recording tenor trombone with F-attachment (SN 938766, circa 1974) is a well-preserved example of one of the most respected American trombone designs ever produced. Built during a period when Olds instruments were engineered for longevity, this Recording reflects craftsmanship, tonal refinement, and mechanical reliability that remains relevant decades later.

The instrument featured an 8.5″ rose/gold brass bell, a lightweight dual-bore nickel silver handslide with octagonal fluted inners, and Olds’ traditional rotary F-attachment. Prior to its sale, it received full professional shop service at The Brass Exchange, including cleaning, mechanical inspection, alignment verification, and play testing. The horn played cleanly and efficiently across the range.

All parts remained original. The instrument included the original Olds case and mouthpiece.

Player & Teacher Perspective

From a playing standpoint, the Olds Recording occupies a rare space. Although technically a small-bore tenor with F-attachment, the large 8.5″ bell allows the instrument to project with surprising depth and presence. It feels nimble and compact in the hands, yet produces a sound that carries comfortably in ensemble settings. The Olds rose/gold brass contributes a warm tonal core with controlled overtones.

From a teaching perspective, instruments like this bridge generations. The bore size and balance are approachable for younger players, while the sound, response, and build quality are unmistakably professional. It is an instrument a player can grow into rather than out of.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Is the Olds Recording a professional trombone?
Yes. Although approachable for students, the Recording was built to professional standards and remains fully capable for ensemble and freelance work.

Why is an F-attachment helpful for younger players?
The F-attachment allows access to low notes without extreme slide extension, helping players maintain proper technique and sound while developing range and control.

How does an Olds Recording compare to modern student trombones?
Many modern entry-level instruments are designed for short-term school use, while vintage Recordings were built for decades of reliable performance and often offer stronger materials and craftsmanship.
