YAMAHA

Overview

This Yamaha YSL-644OII is a good, honest, fully serviced medium-bore tenor trombone. It has the full 8.5" yellow-brass bell normally seen on .547 large-bore pro horns — but the .525 bore makes it easier to play, especially for advancing students and adults returning to music.

Before the Xeno 800-series existed, the 600-series was Yamaha’s top line. Changing a model name doesn’t change the musical reality — and this horn still plays the part.

Full Shop Service Completed

This instrument has undergone a complete professional service, including:

  • Full chemical bath – flushed and cleaned throughout

  • Rotor removed, cleaned, polished, and lubricated

  • New bumpers and play tested

  • Handslide alignment – slide is very straight

  • Gravity-fall test – slide moves freely under its own weight

  • No inner-slide plating defects

  • No red rot in slide tubes or crook

  • Bell is dent-free, with no crease history

Result: clean response, predictable slotting, and a feel that lets you focus on playing — not the tool in your hands.

Value in Today’s Market

To help frame this instrument:

  • A new Yamaha YSL-446G (intermediate, no F-attachment) lists around $2,771 in 2025

  • A current Yamaha YSL-620 / YSL-640 (modern medium-bore equivalents) list between $3,100 – $3,200 in 2025

  • This fully serviced YSL-644OII, originally a top-line Yamaha, is offered at $1,095

You can spend more — but don't always need to.

Many families get told to “just get a trigger trombone” — often by people who don’t play trombone themselves — and that advice can unintentionally push parents toward spending far more than they need to.

Who This Fits Best

  • Young advancing players stepping up from their first student horn

  • Adults returning to playing who don’t want heavy weight or large-bore air demand

  • Anyone who wants a real professional-level instrument without overspending

A medium-bore .525 often sits in the sweet spot between comfort and tone — it gives support and flexibility.

Included

  • Yamaha YSL-644OII medium-bore tenor trombone

  • Small-shank mouthpiece (included)

  • Original Yamaha case (good condition – exterior stickers present)
