Overview

This mid-century Reynolds valve trombone (serial 295556) represents the aesthetic and tonal qualities that define 1950s American brasswork — compact ergonomics, hand-executed manufacturing, and a lively, centered voice with real personality. Prior to its sale, this example completed full professional shop service at The Brass Exchange, including chemical bath, valve lapping, alignment checks, new felts and pads, and a full mechanical evaluation.

All major components remained original, including the lacquered yellow-brass bell and slide tubes. The finish showed visible lacquer wear and natural patina consistent with age, but there were no dents or structural issues. Tonally, the horn delivered a clean, efficient response well suited for jazz, commercial playing, brass band doubling, or players exploring valve technique on a medium-bore platform.

A black soft gig bag was included at time of sale.

Player Perspective

Valve action on SN 295556 was quick, well-sealed, and consistent after lapping, giving each note a clear center with trumpet-like articulation while retaining warmth from the bell flare. For doublers or players new to valve trombone, the instrument felt intuitive and approachable, while experienced players appreciated its compact, responsive mid-century character.
