Overview
This Conn Victor 5G Valve Trombone, serial number G1970024, built in September 1979, has now been sold and is preserved here as part of The Brass Exchange Archive of Sold instruments. Produced during Conn’s late-Elkhart / early-Abilene transitional period, the 5G featured an 8" yellow-brass bell with unsoldered wire rim, original lacquer, and a three-piston valve system.
The Conn Victor valve trombone line has long been respected for its lively response, centered tone, and reliable piston design. This example was unusually clean for its age, with preserved metalwork and minimal wear patterns typical of 1970s valve trombones. It included a black nylon gig bag (mouthpiece not included).
📚 Historical Perspective
Conn Victor valve trombones such as the 5G were widely used in jazz ensembles, brass bands, and school programs, particularly for players transitioning from trumpet, baritone, or euphonium. The unsoldered wire-rim bell design contributes additional shimmer and projection, giving these horns a lively voice without excessive brightness.
Instruments from the 1970s Conn production period remain valued for their dependable construction and musical versatility. Clean, serviced examples are increasingly difficult to locate, especially with original lacquer and properly regulated pistons. These valve trombones continue to serve as practical performance instruments while also documenting Conn’s transitional manufacturing era.
