KING

Overview

If you’ve followed King Silversonic trombones over the years, you already know the reality:
truly untouched H.N. White–era examples almost never surface.

This mid-1960s King 3B Silversonic (SN 416211) came from a long-time collector whose instruments have consistently ranked among the finest we’ve ever handled. Without hesitation:

This is the cleanest 1960s King 3B Silversonic ever to pass through The Brass Exchange.

Everything is original — lacquer, solder work, handslide, sterling silver bell, gold-plated interior, valve block. Nothing has been repaired, altered, or refinished.

The sterling bell remains pristine, with 100% intact gold interior plating. The nickel-silver outer slide and yellow-brass end crook show no wear, no red rot, and no plating issues. Slide action is elite by any standard.

For context, King’s modern Legend Series replicas (2025 MSRP approx. $4,787) do not include a gold interior bell and use different alloy formulations. True H.N. White craftsmanship delivers resonance, color, and projection that modern horns simply cannot replicate.

This instrument represents what collectors hope for but rarely find:
time-capsule condition, complete originality, and an unmistakable 1960s Silversonic voice.

Condition & Preservation

  • All original components

  • Original lacquer, beautifully preserved

  • Handbuilt sterling silver bell with flawless gold interior plating

  • Nickel-silver outer slide with yellow-brass end crook

  • No dents, dings, patches, or solder work

  • Handslide is 100% — smooth, aligned, and premium in every respect

  • Collector-performed ultra-clean prep; no additional in-shop service required

This horn truly feels as though it spent decades in climate-controlled storage, not active circulation.

Case & Accessories

Included is the original period accessory set, all in unusually fine condition.

The brown King-branded canvas cover protected the coffin-style case since the 1960s, which explains why the black-and-silver case underneath remains so well preserved. Hardware, handle, and interior are exceptionally clean.

Also included is the original King M21 mouthpiece (J.J. Johnson model) — a historically appropriate and musically ideal pairing for a Silversonic of this era.

Everything shown in the photographs was part of the original package.

Player Perspective

Sterling silver responds differently than brass, especially on a mid-1960s H.N. White build:

  • Huge clarity

  • Explosive projection

  • Focused articulation with sparkle

  • Warmth and color enhanced by the gold-plated interior

  • Resonance modern alloys struggle to approach

When pushed, a sterling bell amplifies dynamically in ways traditional brass cannot — which is why the 3B Silversonic defined the small-bore jazz lead sound of its era.

This particular example played exactly as it appeared: alive, brilliant, centered, and effortless.

Historical & Collector Context

Silversonics from this period represent peak Cleveland craftsmanship:

  • Handbuilt sterling silver bells

  • Meticulous gold interior plating

  • Superior alloy formulation

  • Build quality exceeding modern production standards

Because King serial dating is grouped in five-year ranges, serial number 416211 places this instrument firmly in the 1965–1966 period.

Untouched originals of this caliber are investment-grade and continue to appreciate when preserved correctly.
