SHIRES

Pre-owned S.E. Shires Q30YA tenor trombone featuring the open-wrap axial-flow F-attachment and .547-inch bore design. This early-generation Q-Series horn carries the hallmarks of Shires craftsmanship with balanced tone, fast response, and solid projection.

It has received full professional service here at The Brass Exchange: chemical bath, internal cleaning, valve alignment, and meticulous slide refinish with new lacquer. The slide now moves freely with crisp alignment and effortless action.

The original plain bell was upgraded to a current-model 8.5-inch yellow-brass bell with modern floral engraving, fully compatible with both Custom and Q-Series setups. Includes one removable leadpipe and a non-original Protec black case in good condition.
Mouthpiece not included.

From a player’s standpoint, the Q30YA delivers the classic Shires sound signature—a centered core with rich overtones. The axial-flow valve provides an open, even response, and the yellow-brass bell adds just the right balance of warmth and shimmer.

This trombone would be a strong choice for a developing student stepping up to their first professional instrument, or for a seasoned player needing a reliable F-attachment tenor for diverse work—especially at under $2,000.

Q : How does the Q-Series compare to the Boston Custom line?
A : Both share the same design principles and acoustic goals. The Custom line is hand-assembled in Boston with expanded options, while the Q-Series offers a factory-set configuration that retains the core Shires feel and sound at a lower price point.

Q : What kind of service was performed on this instrument?
A : Complete shop service including chemical bath, slide polish and re-lacquer, valve inspection and alignment, and overall mechanical adjustment. It’s ready for professional use out of the case.

Q : Is this bell interchangeable with Custom components?
A : Yes — the current engraved 8.5-inch bell and leadpipe system are fully compatible with both Q and Custom Shires trombones.

Q : Who is this model best suited for?
A : Players needing a responsive large-bore tenor with F-attachment and professional playability on a budget — ideal for college majors, private teachers, and working musicians.

A brand-new factory-fresh S.E. Shires Q30YA in 2025 carries a MAP price around $4,500, with some dealers offering open-box or demo units in the mid-$3,000 range.
Open-box instruments are typically showroom samples or items that have been briefly test-played but never owned or gigged; they’re fully warranted and inspected, simply discounted because the seal was broken.
You can read more here about what “open box” really means when buying brass instruments online.👉

By comparison, this pre-owned, professionally serviced Q30YA from The Brass Exchange offers equivalent performance and setup quality for under $2,000—a remarkable value for players seeking pro-level playability at less than half the new cost.
