HOLTON

This is a fascinating Holton TR395 Superbone combined with a Yamaha 8-inch yellow-brass bell, creating a one-of-a-kind hybrid that’s equal parts experiment and artistry.
Serial #618341 indicates production more than two or three decades ago; the exact build year is unknown, but its spirit is unmistakably Maynard-era.

The original Holton bell no longer exists, but the Yamaha replacement gives the instrument a slightly narrower, more focused tone. We performed a complete shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including a full chemical bath, slide and valve alignment, pad and felt replacement, and mechanical inspection.
All slides and linkages operate properly, and the lacquer on the valve section remains original.

Includes non-original Protec case. Mouthpiece not included.

Playability & Feel

For trombonists, the slide positions remain completely familiar. Engage the valves and you instantly enter trumpet-style terrain—able to lower or raise pitch while maintaining normal slide positions. Play a jazz lick on the valves, then blend in slide movements for wild, expressive phrasing.

It’s like a toy for a virtuoso — playful yet serious — and the result is an instrument that can cover Maynard Ferguson–style fireworks or smooth, lyrical passages with equal ease. The smaller Yamaha bell tightens the projection slightly, making the sound compact and punchy—ideal for lead or funk settings.

Common Questions

What exactly is a Superbone?
A Superbone is a unique hybrid trombone that combines a traditional slide mechanism with a full three-valve section, allowing the player to use either or both while performing. It opens new possibilities for fast technical passages and chromatic runs—something that pure slide trombones can’t easily achieve.

Who plays or played the Superbone?
The most famous player associated with the Superbone is Maynard Ferguson, who made it legendary in his high-energy big band work of the 1970s. Modern players often use it for funk, fusion, and creative jazz where flexibility and expression are key.

This Holton Superbone represents the creative side of brass performance — a true hybrid that rewards curiosity and skill. Whether you’re a collector, jazz improviser, or studio experimenter, this horn delivers something different every time you pick it up.
