This Yamaha YSL-842 Large Bore Tenor Trombone (Serial No. 003210) is a super clean, pro-level instrument previously owned by a professional player and recently serviced prior to arrival here at The Brass Exchange.

It features an 8.5" yellow brass bell, standard-weight .547 bore handslide, and Yamaha’s traditional rotor F-attachment system. This example shows no dents, dings, or history of major repair work. The slide is smooth, fast, and tight—exactly what you’d expect from a well-maintained Yamaha professional horn.

A key mechanical upgrade on this instrument is the modernized rotor linkage, providing crisp and quiet action. It also includes an aftermarket clear/green-tint trigger-bar thumb rest, adding both comfort and individuality. Overall appearance remains outstanding, with original lacquer showing only minor cosmetic signs of careful use.

The YSL-842 series predates Yamaha’s current YSL-882 Xeno models, but many players still prefer these earlier builds for their lighter feel and more immediate response. This horn plays evenly across all registers, producing that familiar Yamaha clarity and centered tone that blends beautifully in both ensemble and solo settings.

This instrument would make an excellent choice for:

  • Jazz or commercial players who mainly perform on smaller bore horns but occasionally need a responsive F-attachment tenor.

  • Advancing students or young professionals seeking a first true pro-level large bore trombone without the expense of a new Xeno.

Includes: Original Yamaha case in excellent condition.

✅ FAQs

Q: How does the Yamaha YSL-842 compare to the current YSL-882 Xeno?
A: The 842 shares nearly the same specifications but has a slightly lighter bell and bracing pattern. Many players find the 842 more open and flexible, with the Xeno offering a touch more weight and depth.

Q: What’s special about the updated rotor linkage?
A: Yamaha’s original string linkage was smooth but occasionally required frequent replacement. This 842 has a precision mechanical linkage upgrade—silent, durable, and highly responsive.

Q: Is this model suitable for orchestral or solo use?
A: Yes. Its centered tone and excellent projection make it versatile enough for both ensemble and solo work. It also adapts well for commercial or pit applications due to its balanced feel.
