Overview & Playing Characteristics

This Yamaha YSL-681B is a large-bore (.547) open-wrap tenor trombone featuring an 8.5" rose brass bell, similar in character to the legendary Conn 88H. The rose brass alloy produces a dark, complex tone with fewer high-frequency overtones and a warm, resonant core that blends beautifully in both band and orchestral settings.

This instrument has just completed our full professional shop service, including a chemical bath, deep internal cleaning, and a full rotor teardown and inspection. The valve was re-lubricated and adjusted for quiet, fast response. An aftermarket Amado-style water key—the push-button type often preferred by orchestral players—was professionally installed by the prior adult owner.

The slide action is outstanding, perfectly aligned and tension-free, offering a responsive, effortless feel. There are no dents, dings, or previous repairs anywhere on this horn.

Condition & Playability

This YSL-681B is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, with bright, even lacquer and a bell that resonates freely. It includes the original Yamaha hard-shell case, super clean inside and out, and a mouthpiece.

Players will appreciate the rich, dark sound of the rose-brass bell — powerful yet refined — ideal for ensemble playing, jazz band, or symphonic literature.

This model sits above Yamaha’s intermediate 400-series instruments and was designed to meet professional performance standards.
For comparison, online retailers currently list the Yamaha YSL-446G (a step-down intermediate model) for over $2,700 in 2025 — making this professional YSL-681B a remarkable value.

  • Professionals wanting a versatile large-bore tenor with Yamaha’s signature smoothness and refined tone

This YSL-681B offers pro-level performance at a price point lower than most intermediate horns — a true player’s instrument that won’t disappoint.
