This is a pre-owned S.E. Shires Q-TY tenor trombone tuning slide made from yellow brass with a standard taper.
It was originally paired with a Shires TBQ30YA large bore tenor trombone. The slide has seen only light use, shows no signs of damage or modification, and retains its original lacquer at 100%.
It is fully compatible with both Shires Custom Series and Q Series modular components, and can also be used on .525 medium-bore setups for players seeking different tonal blends.
At just $265, this tuning slide represents an excellent value, especially since Q Series components are rarely offered as stand-alone parts by most dealers.
For comparison, a new Shires Custom Series tuning slide retails for around $450 as of 2025.

Q: What tuning slide options does Shires offer?
A: Shires makes two main categories of tuning slides:
Q Series — available in yellow or gold brass, always built with a standard taper.
Custom Series — available in yellow or gold brass (and occasionally nickel silver by special order) and can be ordered with Standard or X taper designs.
Q: What’s the difference between Standard taper and X taper?
A: Standard taper slides have a more gradual internal transition from the large to small diameter, which promotes a balanced, flexible feel and centered tone.
X taper slides have a more rapid taper—similar to the classic Bach taper—which produces a quicker response and more focused core. X taper slides are often recommended for Shires Custom bells such as the Chicago Model, Vintage New York, and most Type II bells, where added focus and efficiency complement the bell’s broader character.
The Brass Exchange has been an Authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since 2012.
