This is a factory new Shires TYX tuning slide for Custom Series tenor trombones, hand-built at the S.E. Shires workshop in Boston. Offered with full manufacturer warranty through The Brass Exchange, an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop dealer since 2012, this component represents the latest production quality available.
The TYX tuning slide features drawn yellow brass tubing with the X taper design. It was created to pair especially well with Type II tenor bells and fully assembled Shires models such as the TBVNY (Vintage New York) and TBCH (Chicago Model). On these bells, the X taper brings out the full resonance and response the instruments were designed for, making them “come to life” in performance.
That said, fitment is universal across the Shires Custom Series system, including both .525 medium-large bore and .547 large bore tenor trombones. Many players choose to experiment with the TYX on bells beyond the intended pairings — from traditional orchestral setups to custom builds — and the results are highly player-dependent. Ultimately, what matters most is how the slide feels and responds to each individual musician.
