GETZEN

The Getzen 3508R belongs to the Custom Series line built in Elkhorn, Wisconsin — home of Getzen’s world-renowned craftsmanship. Constructed by the same team behind Edwards trombones, this horn delivers the kind of precision and balance usually reserved for fully custom models.

This example features a 7.75" rose brass bell paired with a lightweight dual-bore (.500–.508) nickel-silver handslide, offering a tonal blend of warmth, clarity, and quick response. The rose brass bell produces a darker, richer core sound that can light up beautifully for lead work and solo playing — ideal for players who want flexibility across small-group and big-band settings.

Overall condition is very good. No major repairs or issues to report — just a few minor cosmetic marks near the slide crook. The slide action is about as good as a slide can be — totally smooth and plays super easy. We performed a complete shop service and play-test here at The Brass Exchange.

  • Original parts throughout

  • Edwards-style removable leadpipe (one included)

  • Includes a pre-owned gig bag and Bach Mouthpiece- Choice of 7C, 11C, 6 1/2, 5GS

Player Perspective

The 3508R remains a favorite for jazz and commercial players who need a responsive small-bore horn with a rich tone palette. It bridges the gap between classic King 2B/3B design and modern modular horns like Edwards, offering the best of both worlds — warmth and effortless playability with modern consistency.

Pricing Context

New Getzen 3508R models typically list in the U.S. around $3,000 – $3,300, while open-box or demo units often appear in the low $2,000 range. This pre-owned example offers the same performance and craftsmanship for significantly less.

FAQ

Q: How does the Getzen 3508R compare to Edwards trombones?
A: The 3508R is built by the same craftsmen in Elkhorn, WI, using many of the same parts and techniques as Edwards trombones. While Edwards horns are fully custom-built to order, the Getzen Custom Series offers a streamlined version with fewer configuration choices—but at a more accessible price point, while still delivering professional performance.

Q: What’s the advantage of a rose brass bell?
A: Rose brass (sometimes called gold brass) contains more copper than yellow brass, producing a darker, warmer sound. It’s especially valued in jazz and commercial settings where players want a rich core tone that can also brighten up when pushed.

Q: Is this a good horn for advancing students?
A: Yes. The 3508R is widely recommended for serious high school, college, and adult players who are ready for a professional small-bore jazz trombone. It’s versatile enough for section playing, lead work, or solo settings.

Q: Does the 3508R use Edwards leadpipes?
A: Yes. The handslide is threaded for Edwards-style removable leadpipes, allowing players to fine-tune resistance and response. One leadpipe is included with this instrument.
