KING

This vintage King 3B trombone, serial #485736, was built in the 1970s during the early Eastlake era and represents one of the most beloved small-bore jazz trombones ever produced. With its .508" bore and 8" yellow brass bell, it delivers the classic King balance of warmth, clarity, and effortless projection that has made the 3B the standard for jazz and commercial players for decades.

Compared to smaller jazz models, the King 3B offers more body and projection, while remaining quicker and more agile than large-bore jazz horns.

The King 3B’s reputation is well-earned — it’s the horn behind the sound of countless big bands and small groups, favored by legends such as J.J. Johnson for its agility and responsiveness. Even today, the 3B remains the top choice for players seeking a focused, colorful tone that works equally well in lead or section roles.

This example is in excellent condition and represents a fully serviced vintage King 3B trombone ready for serious players. It received a complete professional shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including a full chemical bath, precision slide setup and alignment, and detailed inner slide polishing.

The slide is smooth, quick, and tension-free with no plating issues. The original lacquer shows only light cosmetic wear in the grip area and remains bright and attractive overall — a textbook example of a well-preserved vintage King 3B.

All work was performed in-house by our professional brass technicians.

Includes an older-style Protec case in good condition, providing secure, lightweight protection for transport and storage. Mouthpiece not included.

Personal Note from Doug

Having grown up in the 60s and 70s, I spent countless hours listening to the few J.J. Johnson records I could find as a kid. Back then, there was no YouTube, Spotify, or streaming — just record stores and the occasional jazz program on the radio. When I got my first King 3B in the 1970s, the very first note I played gave me that unmistakable J.J. vibe. I was instantly hooked. That connection between the player and the horn is something you never forget — and it’s why I still get excited every time a great vintage 3B like this comes through the shop.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Why do so many players still prefer vintage King 3B trombones?
Vintage 3Bs from the 1960s and 1970s are known for their precise craftsmanship and lively response. Many professionals find them more resonant and colorful than newer production horns.

Is this a good choice for an advancing player or semi-professional musician?
Absolutely. The King 3B’s medium-bore design makes it comfortable to play while still capable of pro-level tone and projection. It’s a great all-around horn for jazz, concert band, or crossover work.

How does this 3B compare to newer Conn-Selmer production?
Modern King 3B “Legend” models retail for several thousand dollars new, but many players still prefer vintage builds like this one for their feel and tonal warmth.
