✦ Overview
The Benge 190F represents one of the final generations of U.S.-made Benge trombones, produced in the early 1990s before the brand was retired.
As Benge’s flagship large bore tenor model, the 190F was designed to compete directly with established symphonic instruments such as the Bach 42, offering professional-level performance in a slightly lighter, more agile platform.
This model features a .547" bore, open wrap F-attachment, and an 8.5" gold brass bell finished in its original honey-colored lacquer. The higher copper content of the bell contributes to a darker tonal core with excellent warmth and blend, making it particularly well suited for orchestral and symphonic band settings.
Unlike many instruments positioned as step-up models, the 190F was built from the outset as a true professional trombone—and continues to perform at that level today.
✦ Player Perspective
In playing position, the Benge 190F offers a noticeably balanced and responsive feel compared to many modern large bore tenors.
The instrument responds quickly without resistance, allowing for clean articulation and strong tonal center across all registers. The open wrap F-attachment speaks freely, supporting a stable and usable low register with smooth transitions.
The gold brass bell adds warmth and depth without sacrificing clarity, making the horn equally effective for section playing or more exposed passages.
For players seeking a large bore tenor that feels efficient, musical, and less physically demanding than heavier designs, the 190F presents a compelling option.
