Overview

This Benge 190F is a professional-level large bore tenor trombone built in the early 1990s, representing one of the final generations of U.S.-made Benge instruments before the brand was retired. The 190F was Benge’s top-tier symphonic tenor, designed to compete directly with models like the Bach 42 and later Shires large bore offerings.

The instrument features a .547" bore, open wrap F-attachment, and an 8.5" gold brass bell flare finished in the original honey-colored lacquer. The higher copper content of the gold brass bell contributes to a darker, warmer tonal core with excellent blend and depth — particularly well suited for orchestral and symphonic band settings.

This is not a step-up or intermediate horn. The 190F was built from the outset as a true professional instrument, and it plays like one.

Player Perspective

In hand, the Benge 190F feels lighter and more agile than many modern large bore tenors, yet it delivers a broad, confident sound. The response is quick without feeling tight, and the horn centers easily across the range.

The open wrap valve speaks freely, offering a strong low register with clean transitions, while the bell provides warmth without sacrificing clarity. For players who prefer a large bore tenor that doesn’t feel overly heavy or resistant, the 190F strikes a very appealing balance.

This is a horn that rewards good air and musical intent — equally comfortable blending in a section or stepping forward when needed.

Historical Context & Value Perspective

Benge trombones earned a strong reputation among serious players for their consistent build quality and musical reliability. The 190F sat at the top of their tenor trombone lineup — a model intended to last decades, not seasons.

Many surviving examples were school-owned and heavily used. Clean, professionally serviced 190Fs like this one are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Compared to modern imported large bore instruments, this U.S.-built Benge offers professional performance, proven longevity, and long-term value retention.
