SHIRES

This is a pre-owned S.E. Shires bass trombone valve section featuring the standard rotor configuration SN 2292 approximately 10 years old. (often referred to here as the Classic Rotor). It’s a dependent setup tuned to Bb/F/Gb/D and was manufactured during the early years of S.E. Shires, when Steve Shires was still president and directly involved in production.

This section is more than ten years old and was built with exceptional craftsmanship, typical of the Massachusetts-era Shires components. It has never been damaged or repaired. We completed a full shop service at The Brass Exchange, including disassembly, chemical bath, rotor and casing polishing, tuning slide refinishing, linkage adjustment, and full play testing. Valve action is smooth and reliable, and the slide receivers and rotor seals are in excellent shape.

While Shires refers to this as a standard rotor, we often call it a classic rotor to emphasize its traditional response and broad, resonant tone—distinct from modern axial or Trubore systems. It pairs well with any modular Shires bass bell and handslide, offering a familiar feel with dependable articulation and core sound.

This is an ideal option for college students building a custom Shires setup, or professional players looking to reconfigure their instrument without waiting months for a factory order.

As of 2025, a new Shires standard rotor bass valve section retails for approximately $3,350, depending on finish and dealer configuration. This pre-owned version offers the same core performance at a meaningful savings.

FAQ Section:

What is the difference between a Shires standard (classic) rotor and a Trubore valve section?
Both valve types are used on Shires bass trombones and can be configured as either independent inline or dependent offset, like the one shown here. The standard rotor (often called the classic rotor) offers a traditional response, lighter weight, and a round, centered tone with excellent clarity. The Trubore system, on the other hand, uses a dual inline design for more open airflow and a smoother legato feel. Trubore sections are typically heavier and have a shorter thumb lever throw, which some players find more ergonomic. Both systems have fast, reliable valve action and are favored by professional players depending on tonal goals and feel preference. This listing features a dependent classic rotor setup tuned to Bb/F/Gb/D—ideal for players seeking a lighter, more compact configuration with a familiar playing response.

How much does a used Shires bass valve section cost?
Used Shires standard rotor sections typically range from $2,00 to $2,800, depending on condition, age, and finish.

Is this valve section compatible with modern Shires components?
Yes. It is fully compatible with current Shires bells, tuning slides, and handslides. We’re happy to help you match fit if you’re building your setup piece by piece.
