YAMAHA

This Yamaha YSL-354V valve trombone, built in the 1990s, is a strong example of Yamaha’s durable and well-designed student/intermediate brass from this era. It remains a solid, responsive player and is now preserved here as part of The Brass Exchange Archive of Sold Instruments.

The horn shows the hallmark Yamaha characteristics: reliable build quality, centered response, fast valves, and easy projection. Prior shop service included pads, felts, general regulation, and a mechanical check. The valves are smooth with excellent compression, no plating concerns, and consistent feel from top to bottom.

Cosmetically, this instrument shows moderate lacquer wear in the typical high-contact areas, but has no dents, no dings, and no structural issues. For a horn of this generation, it is in very good overall shape.

Includes the original Yamaha hard case (good condition).
Mouthpiece not included.

This model continues to be a favorite for students, doubling players, and brass musicians exploring valve trombone. Today, a new Yamaha YSL-354V exceeds $2,280 (2025 pricing), making this vintage example notable for its value, durability, and classic Yamaha consistency.

What makes the 354V a smart choice for students or doubling players?
The YSL-354V is a natural fit for trumpet and baritone/euphonium players transitioning to valve trombone, especially in jazz band or marching settings where slide technique isn’t required. Teachers recommend it for its familiarity, fast learning curve, and strong intonation.

Is a valve trombone useful in smaller school programs?
Yes — absolutely. Many schools with limited trombone sections use valve trombone as an easy, effective path for trumpet or baritone players to fill jazz band or low-brass roles. A forward-facing bell also blends more authentically with a trombone section than upright euphonium bells, improving ensemble tone and stage appearance.

How does this model perform for advancing players?
It offers secure slotting, smooth articulation, and dependable response across all registers. Even with its student/intermediate classification, the 354V remains a highly usable horn for personal practice, gigging, and doubling work.
