King 3B Trombone – 1965 H.N. White Era, Original Lacquer, Closet Find

This King 3B trombone, built in 1965 during the H.N. White era in Cleveland, Ohio (serial number 419512), is a true one-owner closet find and one of the finest 3Bs we've had in the shop. It came to us in remarkable condition and received a full professional cleaning and setup, including a chemical bath and inspection. The horn has no dents or dings, no signs of prior damage, and no slide issues. It is fully ready to play.

The sound is dark, warm, and unmistakably vintage. From the first notes, you hear the classic jazz character that made the 3B legendary—especially in the hands of J.J. Johnson, the most iconic jazz trombonist associated with this model. This horn delivers that same tone and response, making it ideal for serious players who want the real thing—not a modern replica.

Cosmetically, it features all original lacquer and parts. The lacquer has aged beautifully, with only minor wear around the neckpipe. The rest of the horn is pristine, with a rich, golden finish that has mellowed over time. It comes in an original alligator-textured coffin-style case that’s in exceptional condition, with a strong top handle and fully functional latches. It’s rare to find both the horn and case in this level of preservation.

Anyone who has searched for a King 3B knows that today’s modern King 3B Legend models start around $3,000. This is the original—the instrument those replicas are modeled after. It’s a standout example of what makes the 3B so enduring among jazz and lead players.

This may be a once-in-a-lifetime horn for the right player.

This King 3B has been sold and is now part of our historical reference archive.
