This vintage Olds Super trombone, serial number 23058, was built in the late 1940s at the original Los Angeles factory. One of the most iconic models in Olds history, the Super remained in production until the company closed its doors in the late 1970s. In fact, the last trombone ever produced by F.E. Olds was a Super — a historically verified piece that passed through our shop years ago. You can view that remarkable instrument and the factory letter of provenance in our Historic Olds Super Archive Listing here.
This example is in excellent condition with all original parts and lacquer. It features the signature dual bore handslide (.485"/.500") with fluted inner tubes (octagonal cross-section) — a unique Olds innovation that promotes quick response and centered tone. The bell is 7 3/8" gold brass with a hand-engraved nickel silver tone ring and L.A. engraving, adding both tonal focus and visual charm.
The horn requires no service and is fully ready to play. It accepts a small shank mouthpiece (not included) and comes in the original case. This would be a fantastic pro-level jazz horn for anyone looking to experience the classic Olds sound — warm, flexible, and brilliantly responsive. It's also an ideal vintage step-up for advancing students in jazz ensemble settings.
Why is the Olds Super considered one of the most important jazz trombones of the 20th century?
The Olds Super combined unique features like the fluted dual bore slide and nickel tone ring with a compact bell flare — producing a sound that was both nimble and rich. It was favored by lead and section players alike for its agility and tonal character. With decades of production, the Super became a staple in American jazz and remains a sought-after model for vintage collectors and serious players today.
