✦ Overview

Used Yamaha YSL-455G .525 bore (medium) straight tenor trombone, serial #003869. This model features an 8" gold brass bell and plays in the same size class as the classic Bach 36. It’s closely related to Yamaha’s YSL-447G, but fitted with a small-shank receiver for compatibility with standard student and intermediate mouthpieces.

We performed a full shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including a chemical bath and mechanical inspection. There are no dents or dings, and the slide is exceptionally smooth—straight tubes, no plating loss, and quiet action. The horn shows typical lacquer wear from storage and age, presenting a soft, “freckled” look rather than bright shine. This cosmetic wear has no effect on playability, and the horn itself plays terrific, with a clean, focused sound and excellent response.

✦ Player Perspective

Includes the original Yamaha case, which remains solid and dependable. One section of the felt liner had come loose; we reattached it—color match isn’t perfect, but it functions as intended. The case is lightweight, durable, and very easy to carry, ideal for younger players or anyone commuting to school or ensemble rehearsals.

The YSL-455G is an outstanding choice for beginners stepping up from a student horn or intermediate players ready for a more refined instrument. Its .525 bore provides a great balance of resistance and tone, and it pairs well with a 6½AL small-shank mouthpiece (not included).

New Yamaha 400-series straight tenors currently retail near $1,800, so this model represents strong value and is more than capable of taking a motivated student or community player to the next level.

✅ FAQs

Q: How does the YSL-455G compare to the YSL-447G?
A: Both share similar design elements, but the YSL-455G uses a slightly smaller bore and small-shank receiver, offering a bit more focus and resistance—ideal for developing players seeking easier airflow and better endurance.

Q: What does the gold brass bell do for the sound?
A: The higher copper content of gold brass produces a warmer, smoother tone, helping players shape a centered sound without excessive brightness. It’s a great fit for concert, jazz, and ensemble use.

Q: Is the original case still good for daily use?
A: Yes, this original Yamaha case remains sturdy, protective, and lightweight. The small felt repair ensures the interior stays functional. Many older Yamaha cases are built to a higher durability standard than modern molded replacements.
