SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires TBQ30YR tenor trombone, serial number Q3563, is a lightly used example of one of the most dependable large-bore orchestral tenor trombones in the Shires Q-Series lineup. It is a few years old but has seen very little playing time and has just received a full shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including chemical cleaning and inspection.

The horn is in excellent playing condition with a smooth, responsive slide and strong compression. It features an 8½-inch yellow brass bell with floral engraving, traditional rotary F-attachment in an open-wrap design, and a standard-weight .547 slide with wide crook. It includes one removable leadpipe, the original mouthpiece, and the original case (one backpack strap missing).

New Q30YR models sold in early 2025 around the mid-$3k range, with manufacturer price increases expected. For advancing players or professionals seeking a dependable orchestral tenor, this is a very strong example.

Player Perspective

From a professional player’s standpoint, the Q30YR offers a warm, centered symphonic tenor sound with excellent clarity and reliable intonation. The traditional rotor keeps the response smooth and predictable, and the wide-crook slide gives a comfortable feel familiar to players coming from Bach 42B or Conn 88H setups.

This model is often chosen as a first professional large-bore tenor trombone because it blends easily in ensembles while still projecting when needed. It’s also a smart upgrade for young players moving into college-level or community orchestra work.
