YSL-353OR Rose Brass Medium Bore – New Old Stock – Archive
Yamaha YSL-353OR, serial number 017463, is a new old stock trombone straight from Japan. This model is rarely seen on the U.S. market. It features an 8" rose brass bell and a dual bore slide (.500–.525). The handslide is wider than the standard straight .500 bore model YSL-354 and also has a wider tuning slide and more width across from neck to bell, giving it a more open, expansive feel.
It also includes the Euro/Japan style balance weight, improving balance and comfort. The lacquer is perfect, with no dents or dings, and the slide is fantastic — as good as any pro-level horn.
This horn would have been ideal for an advancing student or adult player wanting a high-quality option without paying full retail. It includes the original Yamaha case and factory mouthpiece.
We have had three or four of these over the past year and really liked this model. The rose brass bell offers a darker sound compared to yellow brass and has a beautiful color and finish. The dual bore slide (.500–.525) uses a standard small shank mouthpiece but delivers a much bigger sound than a straight .500 bore. Perfect for concert band, jazz band, or small groups where a large bore trigger horn isn’t needed.
A new comparable YSL-354 in yellow brass sells new today for $1,577, making this model a fantastic value when available.
When buying brass instruments online, what does “new old stock” actually mean?
“New old stock” (NOS) refers to instruments or parts that were produced in an earlier period but never sold or regularly played. These items remain in essentially unused condition, offering players a like-new experience without modern price tags.
