YAMAHA

This Yamaha YSL-891Z represents one of the most successful modern jazz trombone designs of the past two decades. Yamaha created the 891Z with input from two world-class players—Andy Martin and Wycliffe Gordon—resulting in a .508 bore horn that delivers the agility of a classic King 3B with the refinement, consistency, and modern response Yamaha is known for. This example was previously owned by a dedicated working player and has been fully serviced in our shop, making it an excellent choice for anyone stepping into their first professional-level jazz trombone or upgrading from a student/intermediate instrument.

The horn features a lightweight .508” bore slide, two removable leadpipes, and an 8" yellow brass bell. Slide action is excellent with no tube defects. The lacquer shows honest playing wear but nothing severe—exactly what you’d expect from a well-loved jazz horn that has never been damaged. Overall appearance is very good. This instrument has been fully cleaned, chemically bathed, checked for alignment, and prepared for reliable performance. It includes the Yamaha Xeno black flight case, which is in beautiful condition.

From a player’s perspective, the YSL-891Z is one of the most flexible small-bore trombones ever produced. It slots cleanly, articulates quickly, and can handle everything from lead work to small-group playing. Compared to vintage horns of the same bore size, the 891Z gives players a more centered core and better intonation with modern mouthpieces. It’s a favorite among commercial, jazz, and pit musicians because it blends easily yet can cut when needed.

Yamaha’s rise to global prominence in the brass world is remarkable. Back in the early 1980s, many American players viewed Yamaha as a new, foreign company entering a deeply traditional U.S. instrument market. Some older musicians—especially those who had lived through World War II—were openly skeptical when Yamaha trombones first began appearing in ensembles. Yet, as more players had the chance to actually perform on these instruments, opinions shifted rapidly. By the 2000s, Yamaha’s trombone lineup had earned a reputation for reliability, consistency, and professional-grade craftsmanship. Today, Yamaha remains one of the world’s most respected manufacturers of brass instruments across every level of playing, from beginner to elite professional.

This particular YSL-891Z is an excellent representation of Yamaha’s modern jazz design philosophy: fast, light, responsive, and built to last. Whether you are studying jazz, performing in big band, working musicals, or seeking a dependable commercial double, this model has stood the test of time—and continues to be a top choice for advancing players.

FAQs

Where is a good place to find a used professional jazz trombone?
Many players begin their search at general marketplaces, but the best place to find a used professional jazz trombone is through a specialty brass shop with dedicated expertise, detailed photography, and fully prepared instruments. Shops like The Brass Exchange inspect, clean, and play-test every horn, ensuring the instrument is performance-ready upon arrival. You also gain access to expert guidance on model selection, condition, mouthpiece compatibility, and setup—support you won’t find on general retail sites.

How does the Yamaha YSL-891Z compare to a King 3B?
Both models share the classic .508 bore and are favorites among jazz players. The 3B has a vintage, colorful character, while the 891Z offers a more centered core and modern consistency. Players who want quick response, accurate intonation, and a clean, refined sound often prefer the Yamaha.

Is the 891Z a good first professional horn?
Absolutely. It remains one of the most reliable models for advancing jazz and commercial players. The two-leadpipe system makes it adaptable to different playing styles.
