SHIRES

Overview

This S.E. Shires Q36GR bass trombone, serial number Q12xxx, came to us as a lightly played demo from a trusted professional player and represents one of the most reliable modern bass trombone setups available today. Built on the respected Shires Q-Series platform, this horn delivers a centered orchestral sound, excellent response, and smooth valve feel with the consistency players expect from Shires design.

The instrument includes three leadpipes, mouthpiece, and the original Shires case with backpack straps and solid carry handle. Condition is excellent overall, with only one or two very small mute marks as shown in the photos. No factory defects, no service needs, and the slide is straight and smooth.

While Shires modular design allows customization with Custom Series components, this Q36GR plays beautifully exactly as it sits. As an authorized S.E. Shires Pro Shop since before the Eastman acquisition, we see many Q-Series horns, and this is a strong example.

Player Perspective

From a professional player’s standpoint, the Q36GR offers a broad, stable orchestral sound with secure slotting and easy response through the middle and low registers. The low range speaks cleanly without excessive effort, and the horn blends naturally in section work while still carrying in large halls.

Players coming from Bach 50-style horns or Conn 62H setups usually adjust quickly to the Q36GR. The balance is comfortable, the valves feel quick and quiet, and intonation tendencies are predictable. For players seeking a dependable professional bass trombone without needing a full custom build, the Q-Series platform makes a lot of sense.
