Archive Overview

This King 3B Plus Silversonic Model 2103PL represents one of the more unusual and desirable variations of the classic King 3B design. Built in the 1980s, it pairs a larger .525 bore handslide with an 8" solid sterling silver bell — creating a horn that bridges small-bore agility with big-band projection and power.

Sterling silver bells are known for their remarkable resonance and tonal energy. From a professional player’s perspective, they often require a bit more air to fully resonate at 100%, but once energized, the sound has a depth and brilliance that traditional brass bells rarely match. In a large jazz ensemble or commercial setting, this combination delivers presence, clarity, and excitement without losing core.

This example received full shop service at The Brass Exchange, including chemical cleaning, slide alignment, and a complete mechanical inspection. The instrument shows no dents or structural issues. A previous neckpipe repair with a properly installed brass patch is present, but it was executed cleanly and has no impact on playability or stability.

The slide remains straight and quiet, and the horn plays easily with strong projection. King no longer produces this exact configuration today, and comparable sterling-bell models would likely exceed $4,700 at modern pricing. Many players prefer these earlier versions for their craftsmanship and tonal character.

Rare configurations like the 3B Plus Silversonic have become increasingly collectible among jazz players and King enthusiasts, especially examples that remain structurally sound and professionally serviced.
