Conn 40H SN 267482, made in 1929 during the height of the Roaring Twenties. This instrument is a rare surviving example of Conn’s original “Ballroom Model”, built specifically for small group jazz, early swing, and stage bands of the era. It features a 7" bell and Conn #3 bore size, ideal for focused tone and nimble articulation.
What sets this horn apart is the T.I.S. (Tuning in Slide) configuration — there is no tuning slide on the bell section. Instead, tuning is handled directly in the handslide, a lightweight, compact design that delivers forward momentum in both sound and projection. The added weight in the slide section transfers energy into a bold, present tone that carries in acoustic or amplified settings. Perfect for traditional jazz, Dixieland, and solo work with or without a mic.
The finish is original glass bead silver plating with a beautiful gold wash inner bell. It has received a full service in our shop, including a complete chemical cleaning and inspection. The overall condition is super mint, nearly showroom quality despite its age. The handslide is perfectly straight, free of defects, and operates with exceptional response. There is only one small area of plating wear on the thumb grip of the cross brace – a minor cosmetic note that does not affect performance.
This instrument includes the original case and two vintage mouthpieces, making it a complete period-correct set for players or collectors.
What makes the Conn 40H a favorite among Traditional Jazz players?
The Conn 40H combines small bore agility with powerful projection, thanks to its TIS design and weighted slide. For trad jazz musicians, it offers effortless articulation and a bold, punchy tone that can easily cut through a band without sacrificing warmth. The compact build also makes it ideal for tight setups, busking, and vintage stage performances — all with the authenticity and craftsmanship of 1920s Conn.
