OLDS

This Olds Recording jazz trombone is an early Los Angeles-era model, serial #56707, made before the company’s relocation to Fullerton in 1953. Instruments from this period are highly regarded by both players and collectors for their rich tonal character and superior build quality. L.A.-made Olds horns are often considered the pinnacle of the brand’s craftsmanship.

The 8" gold brass bell is beautifully engraved and remains perfectly straight with no history of major damage. Much of the original lacquer has worn off from natural use, giving it a warm, vintage patina. Nickel silver accents on the tuning slide and neckpipe add balance and aesthetic contrast to the gold brass bell.

This model features the signature Olds dual bore slide (.495–.510), designed for responsiveness and agility—particularly effective in jazz and commercial settings. The slide plays well overall, though not flawless: a past ding was removed from the top outer, and there’s a minor ding and some plating loss on one inner. Still, it aligns well and responds clearly. It’s honest vintage condition, not museum-grade, but very playable and original.

This is a fantastic option for jazz players on a budget or students looking to step up to a professional-level vintage horn. Few instruments from this era survive with this level of originality and tone. The Recording model was one of Olds’ most iconic and remains highly sought after, especially from the pre-Fullerton period.

Includes a non-original coffin-style case similar in size and shape to a King 3B case. Full shop service completed, including chemical bath and inspection.

Why is the L.A. era so desirable for Olds instruments?
Olds instruments built in Los Angeles (prior to 1953) are known for superior metallurgy, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Many consider them to outperform later Fullerton models in both tone and build consistency.

How does the Olds Recording compare to modern jazz trombones?
The Recording offers a unique vintage color that blends warmth and brilliance. The dual bore slide and lightweight brass construction make it responsive and flexible for improvisation, while the nickel-silver trim balances its tonal center.

Is this horn suitable for students?
Yes—despite some cosmetic wear, it’s fully playable and ideal for a serious student or a budget-conscious jazz player seeking a historically significant pro-level horn.
