Brass Euphonium – Besson New Standard Early Compensating Model

Besson New Standard Compensating Euphonium – Serial No. 578666
Made in England, circa 1976

This Besson New Standard represents the original compensating euphonium design that defined professional British-style euphonium sound for decades. Instruments from this period are widely respected for their tonal depth, secure intonation, and characteristic warmth that continues to influence modern designs.

This example was in excellent playing condition at the time of sale. Valves showed no plating wear, there was no evidence of red rot, and all pads, felts, and tuning slides were functioning properly. The mouthpipe is configured for large-shank trombone/euphonium mouthpieces, making it immediately familiar for advancing players.

A notable feature of this instrument was a custom MTS main tuning slide trigger, professionally installed in Germany by Meinl-Weston. The trigger system was exceptionally well executed and provided precise, intuitive pitch correction, enhancing an already strong intonation profile without altering the horn’s core sound or response.

This euphonium had been used by a professional player during and after their college years and served as an excellent example of a first true pro-level compensating euphonium. New Besson compensating euphoniums today often list in the $10,000+ range, and this vintage New Standard delivered the same foundational sound concept, with the added benefit of the tuning slide trigger.

The instrument was supplied with a Protec padded gig bag with backpack straps.
