The Yamaha YSL-354 remains the gold standard of student trombones, built in Japan to exacting standards that set it apart from entry-level alternatives like the YSL-200. Known for its durability, intonation, and reliability, this model has become the most widely recommended choice for beginning players.
This example, serial number 683818, was adult-owned and gently used. It featured an 8" yellow brass bell and a .500 bore slide, both in excellent playing condition. The slide was smooth and responsive, the lacquer remained near-perfect, and there were no structural issues. It came with the original Yamaha mouthpiece, a bottle of slide lubricant, and a clean, easy-to-manage vintage-style case.
In comparison, a brand-new YSL-354 sells for over $1,500–$1,700 today. Many new instruments show wear quickly under regular student use, but this pre-owned example offered like-new performance at a fraction of the cost.
This Yamaha YSL-354 is now preserved in our Archive of Sold Instruments, serving as a reference for musicians and educators researching Yamaha’s highly regarded student trombones.
