Yamaha YSL-646 Medium Bore .525 Tenor. This model was originally introduced in 1976 and sold exclusively in Japan and Europe. It features a yellow brass bell, lightweight brass handslide, and a traditional rotor valve section. This particular example is among the cleanest we've seen—never damaged or repaired, and the lacquer remains nearly 100% intact. A truly gorgeous horn in both looks and performance.
We performed a complete shop service including chemical bath, rotor flush, and detailed inspection. The slide is smooth and responsive, and the valve action is quiet and quick. This is a professional-level instrument, yet it's also an excellent first trigger trombone for advancing students. Its .525 bore and small shank mouthpiece receiver make it a flexible option across all musical styles—concert band, orchestra, jazz, or chamber ensemble.
Many players, both younger and more experienced, prefer the medium bore size as a more versatile and manageable alternative to large bore .547 instruments. Comparable Yamaha models like the YSL-640 retail new for over $2,400 today, making this an outstanding value as either a step-up or step-down horn depending on the player's needs.
