KING

πŸ”Ž Historical Perspective

This King 3BF Silversonic Trombone, serial number 495049, was built in the late 1970s and represents one of the most respected jazz trombone designs ever produced. The King 3B and 3BF models have remained standards for professional players since their introduction in the 1950s, known for their clarity, projection, and unmistakable King character.

The Silversonic version features a sterling silver bell with gold-plated inner flare, giving the instrument its famous brilliance and tonal depth. This example has an 8" bell paired with a .508 bore nickel silver slide for small shank mouthpieces. All parts and lacquer appear original, and the trombone shows no evidence of prior major damage or repair. It was in excellent playing condition with strong slide action and classic King response.

From a player’s perspective, sterling silver bells require more energy to fully resonate at 100%, but once mastered the tonal energy is enormous and cannot be rivaled by a traditional brass trombone. The 3BF provides that bright, centered jazz tone with enough depth for section work and pop settings.

Some players historically preferred the straight 3B model, but many professionals favor the F-attachment version for the added low-range flexibility. Being able to reach low C, B, and E with the trigger is extremely useful on tight bandstands where 6th–7th position is not practical. It’s one of those features that becomes indispensable once you use it regularly.

King still produces the 3B today in the Legend line, and new sterling silver models sell for well over $4,700. Vintage examples like this offer the classic sound and feel that made the model famous.
