CONN

The Conn 88H-series has been one of the most trusted symphonic-tenor trombones for over half a century.
Among its popular variations, the 88HO adds an open-wrap F-attachment, giving players a freer, more responsive feel in the low register.
It remains a favorite of advancing students and professionals who want a classic Conn sound with modern valve performance.

This particular 88HO was purchased new about 10 years ago and played for only a short period before being stored.
When it arrived at The Brass Exchange, we performed a complete shop service including a chemical bath, rotor-valve service, and a precision slide setup.
The slide was tension-free and highly responsive, the rotor operated smoothly, and the lacquer showed only minimal use around the hand-contact points.
It came with the original hard case in equally clean condition and a suitable large-shank mouthpiece.

For players, the 88HO delivers the warm, broad Conn tone with the added ease of the open-wrap design.
Its .547″ large-bore slide and 8.5″ rose-brass bell make it a true symphonic-tenor workhorse — an excellent choice for concert band, orchestra, and advanced study.
This particular example proved to be a genuine one-owner horn, not a scratch-and-dent or refurbished item, and was ready to play immediately after servicing.

This instrument has been sold and is now presented here in our Historical Archive as a reference for collectors, players, and anyone researching the value of used Conn 88H-series trombones or considering how to sell an older horn.

🟩 FAQs

Q: What is the value of an older Conn 88H or 88HO trombone?
A: Value depends on the specific era, condition, and service history. Clean, well-cared-for examples like this often sell for significantly less than new retail yet retain excellent playability.

Q: How does the open-wrap design affect performance compared with the traditional wrap?
A: The open-wrap layout allows a straighter air path through the valve section, reducing resistance and giving a slightly freer feel when the F-attachment is engaged.

Q: What should a seller do before listing a used Conn 88H-series horn?
A: A professional slide alignment, valve check, and full cleaning can add both playability and resale value — buyers notice a well-serviced instrument.

Q: Is the Conn 88HO still a good choice for today’s advancing students or symphonic players?
A: Absolutely. The 88H-series remains a standard in orchestras and university studios, valued for its warm tone and reliable build.
