Overview
The Bach 42T O.E. Thayer Trombone represents a distinct evolution within the Bach large bore tenor trombone lineup. Built on the foundation of the classic 42 series, this model incorporates the original O.E. Thayer axial flow valve, offering a more open and fluid playing experience compared to traditional rotary valve designs.
This example, serial number 187295, dates to 2006 and remains in very mint condition. It is a true single-owner instrument that has seen minimal playing time and retains all original parts and lacquer. Finding an original Thayer-equipped Bach in this level of preservation is becoming increasingly uncommon.
Design and Features
The defining feature of the 42T is the original O.E. Thayer valve system. Designed to reduce resistance and improve airflow, the axial flow design allows for a smoother transition when engaging the F-attachment and creates a more open overall response.
Key specifications include:
- .547 large bore handslide
- 8.5" one-piece yellow brass bell
- Original O.E. Thayer axial flow valve
- Original lacquer finish throughout
This combination preserves the classic Bach tonal identity while offering a broader, more expansive feel that many players prefer in modern performance settings.
Player Perspective
From a player’s standpoint, this 42T delivers exactly what experienced Bach players expect, with an added level of openness through the valve register. The response is immediate, and the sound carries the familiar Bach core—centered, warm, and projecting with clarity.
The original Thayer valve provides a smooth, less resistant feel that enhances legato playing and technical passages requiring fluid valve transitions. At the same time, the instrument maintains the tonal structure needed for orchestral blending and solo presence.
For players seeking a refined large bore tenor with a more open feel—without moving away from the Bach sound concept—this model continues to be a compelling choice.

📸 Photography From Our Early Archive
Some of the images shown on this page reflect photography from the earlier years of The Brass Exchange. While our current listings feature more advanced lighting and presentation, these photos remain an important part of our historical catalog.
They represent the early stages of our approach to photographing brass instruments—well before “fine-art photography of brass instruments” became an industry standard. These images continue to provide useful reference for finish, originality, and overall condition.
Questions Trombone Players Often Ask
What makes the O.E. Thayer valve different from a rotary valve?
The Thayer (axial flow) valve is designed to provide a more open airflow path, reducing resistance when engaged. Many players experience a smoother, more natural blow compared to traditional rotary valves.
Is the Bach 42T a professional-level trombone?
Yes. The 42T is built on the same professional platform as the 42B and 42BO, with the addition of the Thayer valve system for players who prefer a more open response.
